Birthday of Prominent Aircraft Designer - A.I. Mikoyan

The aircraft designer, one of the founders of jet aviation and MiG-type aircraft, Artyom Ivanovich Mikoyan was born on August 5, 1905. Two times honored as Hero of Socialist Labour, winner of 6 Stalin, Lenin and State awards, he made OKB-155 (today Design Bureau named after A.I. Mikoyan) the main fighter design bureau of the Soviet Union. Starting from MiG-3 - the best high-altitude fighter of the Great Patriotic War to MiG-25 - the best fighter-interceptor capable to exceed speed of sound by three times (the last aircraft model designed in Mikoyan’s lifetime). “MiG” aircraft became famous among pilots all over the world.
 
During its history workers of Mikoyan Design Bureau designed more than 400 types and modifications of aircraft. More than 100 world speed, altitude and climbing speed records have been achieved on MiG aircraft. 
Today this type of aircraft forms basis of the Air Force in Russia and other countries in the world. Artyom I. Mikoyan is immortalized in books, paintings, films and monuments in Moscow (Design Bureau named after A.I. Mikoyan) and memorial complex in the village of Sanain (the Republic of Armenia). Streets in Moscow and Ulan-Ude cities as well as school 166 in Erevan are named after him.
